The Southeast Alternative School (SAS) is a comprehensive, therapeutic day program operated by Community Care Services, Inc. SAS serves students in three campuses: Berkley, Cape Cod and Middleboro. SAS has nearly 25 years of experience offering individualized special education, clinical treatment, prevocational and vocational experience and therapeutic supports in a community-based setting.
The Berkley Campus is a middle school that serves students ages 10 to 14-years-old. The school serves medically stable students challenged by emotional, learning and behavioral disabilities. Typical diagnoses include depression, bipolar disorder, impulsivity, organizational and attention issues, processing and expressive disorders, reading disabilities, etc.
The Cape Cod Campus is a community-based high school that serves medically stable students challenged by emotional, learning and behavioral disabilities. Typical diagnoses include depression, bipolar disorder, impulsivity, organizational and attention issues, processing and expressive disorders, reading disabilities, etc. About half of the students have been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome or have AS characteristics. At the Cape Cod campus, students regularly participate in community service activities.
The Middleboro Campus is a community-based high school that serves medically stable students challenged by emotional, learning and behavioral disabilities. Typical diagnoses include depression, bipolar disorder, impulsivity, organization and attention issues, processing and expressive disorder, reading disabilities, etc. Students explore their readiness for work through our School to Career program, which allows students to investigate occupational interests through intern and apprenticeship placements.
The Southeast Alternative Schools runs 198 days, beginning in August and ending in June. The school operates during the following hours: Monday – Thursday 7:30am – 2:15pm, and Fridays 7:30am – 12:00pm. All three school sites (Berkley, Cape Cod, and Middleboro) each run a summer component, as well. Please contact the program directors for more details.
Interns should have an interest in – and sensitivity toward - the population that this program serves. Community Care Services requires a Criminal Offender Record Investigation (CORI) which may take 2 weeks for some programs. Other requirements include Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training, as well as tuberculosis screening at some programs. We will arrange for completion of all your requirements.
